Audience Encounters

Program Note
Lobby Display
Lobby

For my lobby display, I would plaster the walls with newspaper clippings from real violent crimes, accompanied by small plaques underneath that give a the "fast  facts" of the crime. I want it to be graphic and striking, as colorful and full of bolded text as possible, so that it contrasts sharply with the austere and quiet atmosphere inside of the theatre itself.

I would also have some intermittent discussion questions posted on the walls, i.e. "Did you see the OJ Simpson car chase live or reruns on the news?" or "What's your theory on who killed Jon Benet Ramsay?" These questions are meant to prompt people to discuss famous crimes, which will hopefully take them down a road of speculation.

Then, in the program note, I will point out how people are fascinated by true crime, reporting sensational details that may or may not be true, which contextualizes Wendy Kesselman's study on the real relationships, emotions and situations behind My Sister in this House as a study in psychology rather than in sensationalism.
